  • Creating The Perfect Nursery

Recently we’ve been thinking about how to create the ultimate nursery for a new arrival. Nesting instincts aside, dreaming up the ideal room for the newest addition to your family can be fraught with difficult choices (even if you do know the baby’s gender), so it’s wise to invest in key pieces that will stand the test of time. We’ve put together a shopping list of OKA essentials for new parents: everything that you need to create the perfect nursery.

So you’ve bought the cot, but now where to begin? Start with one or two pieces of storage furniture; surprisingly for something so small, babies certainly have a lot of stuff! A large wardrobe such as our Orleans Armoire, with a rail, removable shelves and four roomy drawers at the bottom will easily house all the necessities in one place. If space allows, you could also opt for a chest of drawers which, if the correct height, would prove a useful extra surface on which to place a changing mat. Go for white or pale painted furniture; neutral décor helps to create a restful atmosphere for both parents and babies (and neatly sidesteps any gender stereotypes). Select your key pieces of furniture wisely and they’ll be useful long after your baby is out of nappies.

With feeding taking place every few hours, an upholstered armchair is invaluable. Choose one that is comfortable (you’ll be spending a lot of time in it) and position it in the corner of the room, making sure it’s not in direct sunlight or too close to any drafts, creating a quiet spot in which to settle your baby. And whilst you’re sitting down, you may as well put your feet up for a few seconds! Invest in a matching footstool to ensure that both you and your baby are fully relaxed.

If you decide to find out your baby’s gender before he or she is born, then it’s only natural to want to decorate accordingly. For those who wish to hint at the gender, opt for colour highlights in your soft furnishings whilst keeping the rest of the décor relatively neutral.

Quilts, throws, cushions and rugs can add gentle swathes of gender specific hues without overpowering the whole room. If there’s no-one in the family who’s fantastic at needlework then we’ve a selection of quilts beautiful enough to become heirlooms passed down through the generations.

A soft throw will help to keep both you and your baby warm and cosy, and is always useful whatever your age. We’d recommend our Faux fur throw, which comes in a variety of colours.

    Rattan Storage

Go overboard on storage as there seems to be no end to how much stuff you’ll need to keep to hand and in order. A selection of rattan baskets are a good place to start for storing everything from towels to toys. We all know how much washing there will be with a new baby so large rattan laundry basket will definitely come in useful! Wooden trunks are both pretty and practical; ours are available in various colours and sizes, and make great toy boxes for when your baby grows up. They’re also fabulous for storing shoes and bags if you wanted to earmark them for your own bedroom.

It’s easy to overlook the everyday items with all the excitement surrounding a new bundle of joy. A bin is absolute essential for a nursery; keep it by the changing table and you’ve somewhere to quickly dispose of nappies and wipes. Our tissue box covers are also useful on a changing station and can be used to dispense baby wipes too. Don’t forget personal finishing touches; add a selection of photo frames around the nursery ready be filled with beautiful images of you and your little one.

With the above in place, all that’s left to do is wait for the new arrival. But by sticking to beautiful, classic styles and neutral shades, you can be sure that the furniture you choose will transcend the nursery and blend in seamlessly with the rest of your home for years to come.
