Moody dark grey walls feel warm and enveloping when lit by multiple sconces in the rooftop restaurant of the Grand Ferdinand in Vienna. Taking the classic bistro look to a luxe level, Burgundy-coloured, button-backed bench seating works with rich brocade armchairs and simple wooden chairs, while the tables are kept pristine with white-on-white table linen and china. It is an easy look to pull off for Christmas - just keep the table top fresh and simple, add in dark damask fabrics with napkins or throws, and boost the shadows with soft candlelight.

The Christmas tree is the essential festive decoration, and each year Claridges sets the bar with its designer creations. In 2017 Karl Lagerfeld turned things upside down with his inverted tree (a good shape for small or awkward spaces) but it was the slivery decorations and snow-like sheepskin rugs that made it utterly magical - and easy to achieve at home. While a nature inspired tree by Kally Ellis for McQueens in 2012, threw out the rule book by using a tree shape created from magnolia branches and lichen moss and hung with baubles, as opposed to the classic fir. Try out the idea on a solitary tree in the garden and hang baubles on bare branches for a special wintery feature.

A colour palette of warm mink and pale sage, give this reception space at Coworth Park an elegant Art Deco mood. Rather than dominating the refined colour scheme, this Christmas tree, covered in silver decorations, adds a subtle festive twist and is balanced within the room by winter floral arrangements of white blooms and dusty green foliage.
