  • A Touch of Velvet

    By Debbie Watson

Velvet was made for winter. Luxuriously soft and comfortable, it instantly makes a room feel smarter – not to mention warmer. We’ve upholstered many of our key pieces of seating in a cotton velvet blend (which is more hardwearing and less prone to marking than pure velvet, therefore infinitely more practical), for classic styles with a seasonal twist. Which colour would you choose?

    RED
Is there a greater statement piece than a red velvet chair? Not a shade for wallflowers, red velvet upholstery is perfect for delivering a punch of colour during the festive season. Combined with black lacquered furniture and metallic accessories, red velvet can look very smart indeed. For a sleek, contemporary dining room, pair our Tiffany chairs in Crimson Red velvet with the Plaza or Park Dining Table, and if styling a living room, the red velvet Melbury Chair (exclusively available online) would sit well alongside a Whippet Grey sofa.

    ORANGE
As the leaves begin to turn, autumn is the most obvious season to introduce orange into your home. A lot of people find this colour a little intimidating, but a russet-tinged orange - such as our Dirty Orange Tiffany Chair – can be both striking and subdued depending on the other colours or finishes it’s paired with. Use as an occasional chair in a hallway or bedroom with Chinoiserie pieces for subtle luxury, or add complementary blue cushions for a greater impact.

    DAMSON
For a truly regal feel, look no further than a formal damson velvet sofa. This rich, jewel-toned shade exudes opulence, and whilst it’s perfect for an autumnal scheme, when paired with ochre and ikat print cushions it would work just as well for spring.

    BLUE
Velvet upholstered furniture needn’t be restricted to the colder months. Blue velvet works all year round; in the summer, combine with blue and white linen cushions and pale wooden pieces for a seaside feel, and when autumn arrives, swap for heavyweight cotton, jute or velvet cushions in darker hues.

    GREY GREEN
This muted shade is perfect for a period home or a country scheme. Bridging the gap between neutral and colour, sage green velvet evokes an air of faded grandeur and can easily be made more or less formal using different cushions. On our Melbury Armchair, we’ve used our Palau ikat print raw silk cushions in a similar colour green for understated country glamour.

    MOLE BROWN
Mole Brown velvet is probably the most practical and versatile choice out of all the velvet colour options. This soft brown shade will easily blend into many country schemes and, like grey green velvet, can be smartened up using accessories in gold or by adding velvet cushions and faux fur throws. This season, we’ve introduced a darker brown velvet to our repertoire, Caviar.

    PORRIDGE
Slightly lighter than Mole Brown, this creamy shade of velvet is an excellent alternative to natural linen upholstery, and would suit both country and city homes. The neutral hue means it can be paired with almost any colour cushion, but we think our Porridge Wentworth and Melbury armchairs look their best with one of our jewel-toned, decadent, metallic embroidered cushions.
