  • Lighting - Spring Colours

Accessorising your home using the uplifting colours of spring is a great way to banish any lingering winter blues from your rooms. And perhaps fittingly, the perfect items to start with are those that are all about lighting up your space: your lampshades.

All-round or luxury lighting, floor or table lamps, card or silk lampshades – whatever you have or prefer, adding an appropriate splash of colour to them this season will go a long way towards bringing some of that springtime cheer indoors.

WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR CHOOSING LAMPSHADE COLOURS?

Any space in your home that's lit up should always be looked at as a whole, so pick shades that complement the other colours in your room.

Decide exactly what your lamp is for – if it’s mainly for function, then light colours will give you maximum illumination, whereas if it’s more about mood or ambience, go for something darker.

If you want your lamp to be the focal point of a room, choose a bold, brightly coloured lampshade – this will make it stand out more from the rest of the room’s decor.

On the other hand, if you’re going for a more subtle approach (or want to tone down a particularly loud lamp), use  neutral lampshade colours.

    WHAT EXACTLY ARE ‘NEUTRAL’ COLOURS?

When it comes to home decor, neutral means, simply, ‘without colour’. Common neutral hues include black, beige, taupe, grey and ivory, and they often have underlying undertones that you should be aware of when matching them with other colours.

    WHAT ABOUT ‘BRIGHT’ COLOURS?

The exact opposite of neutral colours: bold, vivid, adding energy and drama to your palette – especially when thoughtfully combined with a neutral-coloured ‘base’ or background (this is where understanding undertones becomes important).

WHAT ARE THE MOST FLATTERING SPRING LAMPSHADE COLOURS?

    • Go for anything warm and bright – reds, yellows, oranges and golds
    • If you’re thinking of white, try a warmer shade of ivory or cream instead
    • Clean shades of pink, peach and apricot always work well in spring
    • Bright aquas and greens can be great as well
    • For neutral colours, choose beige, tans, browns, or warm greys

    ANY COLOURS TO AVOID?

    • Cool colours with blue undertones – icy blues and pinks, magenta and fuschia – should be a no-no (unless you really miss winter)
    • Dusky or muted colours can sometimes feel a little too ‘gloomy’ for spring (although they can also be a great way of introducing subtle colour into a neutral scheme)
