Be honest with us: hands up if you’re guilty of lavishing attention on the inside of your home and haven’t given a second thought to your outside space during the winter months? We’ll admit that with the first glimpse of sunshine, we’ve noticed that our gardens could do with some tender loving care. This year, we’re getting everything prepared now so that when the great British summer really arrives, we can just sit back and enjoy it. Whether you’ve a postage stamp or acres to play with, some furniture from our Outdoor Living collection, together with a few well-chosen accessories can turn your garden, balcony or terrace into the outdoor space you’ve always dreamed of. Take a look at our five different schemes for outdoor spaces, both large and small.

For those with large gardens... Midsummer Daydream

Large gardens are just perfect for entertaining friends and family during the long, lazy days of summer. A dining table and chairs close to the house may be the most practical option for everyday al fresco dining, but for special occasions - such as celebrating the shortest day – why not set the scene in the most beautiful spot in your garden? For a magical midsummer’s evening, we’ve decorated this grand table with candles, an abundance of flowers and lots of colourful tableware; all that’s missing is a banquet of delicious summer food.

For those who enjoy basking in the sun... Riposa Al Fresco

We’ve always liked the thought of a little sleep during the afternoon, and even more so when we can bask in the sunshine. Take your cue from Mediterranean cultures and create an outdoor space to relax in, either with friends over a cup of coffee, or alone with a book. ‘Riposa’ is Italian for siesta and with inviting pieces such as this indulgent double sunbed or a comfortable sofa set, laden with cushions, you’re all set to enjoy your afternoon nap al fresco. When you emerge from your slumber, a few hurricane lamps and a lightweight throw will allow you to remain outdoors long after the sun goes down.

For those who live beside the sea... Sandy Dunes & Salty Air

If the view from your back garden is a sandy beach stretching for miles, take your decorating cues from the surrounding coastal environment. The palette is largely neutral, blending rattan, driftwood and whitewashed walls with colour accents from the cooler end of the spectrum. Blues ranging from rich cobalt to pale turquoise are used sparingly on accessories and echoed in the painted woodwork. Site a comfortable All-Weather ‘Rattan’ sofa and armchairs in prime position so you can admire the sunrise or sunset. The end result is a relaxed and beautiful home; the ideal environment in which to unwind.

For homes with multiple outdoor spaces... La Vieille Bastide

By creating a number of distinct outside ‘rooms’, the owners of this beautiful French Bastide have both extended and enhanced their home. At the heart is the courtyard dining room featuring a large oval outdoor table perfect for al fresco dining, which is supplemented by a relaxed seating area nearby for postprandial coffees. In a shaded corner of the courtyard close to the house, a pair of armchairs offer a comfortable seat for those seeking solace from the midday sun. Elsewhere, a private roof terrace with an L-shaped sectional sofa is ideal for sunbathing by day and star-gazing by night.

For homes with small outdoor areas... Stolen Spaces

Even the smallest outside space can be turned into somewhere to relax and enjoy the warmth of sunny days. Don’t feel restricted by a tiny balcony, minimal roof terrace or compact garden; instead embrace the challenge and create an intimate space that will make you long for summer and add an extra dimension to your home. A simple café table for two, roomy enough to enjoy breakfast in the sunshine or a glass of wine at sunset is all that’s required.
