It can be hard to balance the practical demands of family life with living in a beautifully decorated home (and it’s tempting not to even try), but a little bit of clever planning (and a LOT of good storage) means that the two need not be mutually exclusive. Moreover there are wonderful opportunities to indulge and create fabulous living spaces that will make family life even more special.
GREAT STORAGE IS KEY
However confined your space, if you can pack all the toys, games and general clobber away at the end of the day (or even better get your children to do it) then lack of space need not be a problem.
Decorating a child’s bedroom is a real opportunity to indulge your creativity and your child’s dreams – if they dream of being a princess then why not surround the bed with drapes? If it’s all about lego then incorporate a special area, perhaps a raised platform, into your scheme. Anything is possible.
INVEST IN A FAMILY DINING TABLE
These days we tend to live in large open plan living areas, so a large dining table is a must, it’s worth going for the quality of a solid Oak or hardwood as your table will be subjected to much use and abuse – whether its from homework, painting or Sunday lunch.
If you have the space, give each child a desk in their bedroom so that they have their own little workspace for writing and for storing all their bits and bobs, it will save arguments over shared spaces and hopefully help motivate them to get their homework done.
