The Big Green Apple

Designing a room in a small apartment in New York was a challenging but exciting project for our founder, Annabel Astor. The clients were a young couple who work from home and they needed it to be versatile. Situated in one of the most desired blocks in Manhattan, the high floor home is a refuge from the noise of the city; the percussion of dogs barking, cabs honking their horns and music emitting from nearby coffee haunts, restaurants and jazz clubs. Large paned windows flood every room with light and have a calming effect, along with the blue and green accessories scattered throughout the apartment.

Sitting Room

Using our Ashmolean Bookshelves, Annabel split the living room into two distinct areas, allowing one side to work as a sitting room and the other, a dining room which doubles up as a workspace. There’s that saying, ‘blue and green should never be seen’, but Annabel through that out of the window with this scheme. The velvet sofas are incredibly comfortable and complement the wonderfully versatile, verdant accessories.

Dining Room

The dining area is next to a large window, so guests can enjoy sweeping views of Central Park over dinner. A large wooden table engulfs the space, perfect for Annabel’s clients, who love entertaining. Annabel decided to frame the table with a matching dining bench and a couple of the Washakie Chairs, as the piece can seat up to fourteen people, but fourteen chairs would make the space feel very crowded. Plus, the dining room also doubles up as a work space, so it needs to be airy and relaxed.

Master Bedroom

As the apartment sits high above the tree tops of Central Park, it was fitting to bring the outdoors in. Annabel wanted to incorporate more natural elements into the bedroom, so she added some stunning green pieces, such as the lamps, cushions and throw. The rest of the scheme was kept fairly neutral, to prevent the bedroom from being too busy.

Hallway

This almost symmetrical hallway appears simple and effortless, but, in fact, each piece has been chosen with care. The parquetry detailing adorning the sideboard beautifully matches the diamond shapes woven into the rug. Unique table lamps, like the one shown here, feature heavily in this New York apartment, as multiple light sources really open up a room.
