Don't let the name fool you, a Han foo dog technically isn't a dog: it's actually a lion. This hand-painted ceramic sculpture is inspired by the traditional Han dogs you find protecting Chinese imperial palaces and places of worship. Lions were first introduced to China during the Han Dynasty through tradespeople and travellers who would share stories of the Asiatic lions they had seen in neighbouring countries. Gradually, the lion earnt its place as a temple guardian. Our Han dog is ceramic and finished with a celadon glaze that draws on early Chinese pottery.
