Everyone has heard of velvet but most do not know what it actually is. Velvet is not a fibre, but the structure of a fibre, as velvet can be made from many materials (i.e. silk, cotton, wool). It is characterised by its woven pile, the raised loops and tufts of yarn it consists of. Velvet is thought to have been originally produced as early as 2000BC, in Egypt.

The process is complicated and prior to the technological advances in machinery, velvet was vastly expensive. It was due to this that velvet became synonymous with nobility and wealth. Elizabeth I was a big fan of this luxurious material, in which she was frequently adorned. But it is not only the European elite who have fallen for velvet. When Harun al-Rashid, the then ruler of Baghdad, died in 809 AD, it was said that 500 pieces of velvet were found amongst the treasures that he left behind.

At OKA we have always loved velvet. It not only looks magnificent but it also has that tactile appeal that few other materials can achieve. Here are some of our favourite velvet pieces:

    Is Orange the New Black?

The Launceston Velvet Armchair is the ultimate way to add that pop of colour into your home. Not only does it look bright and beautiful, but it is also incredibly comfortable. Perfect for a dark or neutral sitting room or hallway.

Do You Want a Great Figure?

Designed by Annabel Astor, the Stafford Dining Chairs come in multiple colours of velvet. They have been designed with a sleek, narrow silhouette, which allows you to fit more of them around the table.

Have you got the Golden Touch?

If you are looking for elegant and luxurious cushion covers then you can stop the hunt. The stunning Shambala Cushion Covers are some of our most popular; they are made from 100% cotton velvet and have a beautiful gold paisley print.

Will You Give Us The Green Light?

Everyone will be green with envy when they see your Trematon Velvet Armchair. This traditionally shaped armchair has been given a modern twist, with its lake green velvet upholstery. An ideal accent chair for a sitting room or bedroom.

    Are You Seeing Red?

This Plain Velvet Cushion Cover is the perfect way to add vibrancy to your scheme, without having to redo your whole room. They look perfect by themselves or they can be combined with more elaborate embellished cushions. Available in 25 colours.

    Are You a Chameleon?

The Belmore Dining Chair will bring luxury to any kitchen or dining room. Its elk brown coloured velvet also shifts in colour, between brown and green, depending on the light, making it a unique addition to your home.

    Ready For The Red Carpet?

The Lydford Velvet Wingchair has all the hallmarks of a classic wingchair but its blood orange upholstery makes it ideal for a contemporary or traditional scheme. The back is slightly reclined for that added comfort.
