Home From Home

"This project is for a family who relocated from New York to London. They walked into our shop and explained they had rented an unfurnished house in Notting Hill for two years. A couple of suitcases of clothes and some personal items were all they were bringing with them. They wanted the house to be furnished comfortably and practically from top to toe, for themselves and their children, aged 3, 10 and 12. This all sounded very possible, but there was a catch - they needed it to be completed within a fortnight. We set to work and here is the result.” – Sue Jones

Dining Room

Home From Home - Dining Room

When you are furnishing an empty house, start by placing the key pieces, then stand back and work out what extras will be either practical or used for effect. Comfortable and versatile dining benches and sofas are the anchor for this small dining room; they work hard to create an intimate yet open space for entertaining.

Sitting Room

For the family sitting room, it’s important to create a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere in a space that works for both children and adults. The key here is that everything – chunky wooden coffee tables, upholstered armchairs, woollen rugs - is very hard-wearing and designed not to show dirt.

Master Bedroom

Bedrooms should be tranquil places so err on the side of caution when mixing patterns: they should complement each other rather than fight for attention. If you have space, place a sofa at the end of the bed as a comfortable spot for reading or relaxing.

Study

An equal balance of work and rest is the best recipe for productivity. A classic desk, smart chair and a comfortable sofa with lots of cushions are all that’s needed to transform an empty room into a quiet home office/snug for working, reading or watching TV.

Kitchen

Start the morning in a relaxed and cheerful kitchen to set the mood for the rest of your day. The extending farmhouse-style dining table is used for breakfasts, lunches and teas, and offers enough room for all the family. Bringing in colour via accessories instantly adds a new lease of life to neutral furniture, so be generous with colourful glasses, cushions, mugs, napkins and plates.
