How to Choose Rugs For Different Rooms

At OKA, we believe rugs are the foundation of a room’s design. More than simply adding softness underfoot, the right rug can define a space, bring furniture together and introduce colour, pattern and texture.

Whether you’re adding warmth to a minimalist interior or layering character into a more traditional scheme, a well-chosen rug has the power to transform how a space looks and feels.

Before choosing a rug, start by understanding the space. Measure the area carefully and think about how it will sit alongside your furniture. Will it be a soft place to land for bare feet, or does it need to withstand the demands of a busy hallway or bootroom.

Every room has its own requirements, so we’ve shared our advice for choosing a rug for each area of your home.

Living Room

In the living room, a rug should anchor the seating area rather than simply fill the floor. It brings sofas, armchairs and coffee tables into a cohesive arrangement, creating a room that feels intentionally designed. Rather than thinking of it as a finishing touch, your rug should be the piece that sets the tone for the whole room.

When choosing a size, consider your seating arrangement rather than the room’s overall dimensions. A rug that’s too small can leave furniture feeling disconnected, while a generously sized rug creates a stronger sense of balance. We recommend positioning the front legs of your sofa and armchairs on the rug to unify the space, allowing it to extend around 20–30cm beyond either side of any furniture. If you have the space, leaving a border of flooring around the edge helps frame the room.

The living room is a place for relaxing, so choose materials and colours that encourage warmth and comfort. Pattern can also play an important role, adding rhythm and depth while balancing larger areas of upholstery or flooring. Our Pardis Rug is a perfect example, with its rich pattern and subtle texture introducing depth without overwhelming the room.

Dining Room

A dining room rug should feel as practical as it is elegant. It frames the table, defines the dining area and allows chairs to move comfortably without disrupting the space. In open-plan homes, a rug is also an easy way to create a distinct dining zone while maintaining the flow of the room.

As a rule, choose a rug that extends at least 60–70cm beyond the edges of your dining table. This ensures chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out, creating a more polished and cohesive look. The shape of your rug should also complement your table – a round design works naturally with a circular table, while a rectangular rug suits a longer dining arrangement. Where possible, centre the rug within the room rather than simply beneath the table. If it’s aligned with a pendant light above, the whole scheme will feel naturally balanced.

For dining spaces, flat-weave and low-pile rugs are ideal as they’re easier to keep clean and allow chairs to glide in and out without catching. Pattern is particularly effective here, adding interest beneath the table while naturally disguising the signs of everyday use. Our Bagha Rug brings these qualities together, with a durable flat-weave and bold geometric pattern that adds visual interest to the dining room while standing up to daily life.

Bedroom

The bedroom is where comfort comes first. A rug instantly creates a warmer, more inviting atmosphere, offering a soft landing underfoot each morning while helping to absorb sound for a calmer, more restful space.

A larger rug also helps the room feel more balanced, softening the larger proportions of the bed and creating a stronger sense of warmth. Alternatively, runners or smaller rugs placed beside the bed can introduce texture without covering the entire floor.

Texture is especially important in the bedroom, where it adds depth as well as comfort. Wool rugs are a natural choice thanks to their softness and durability. Made from hand-knotted wool, our Lapis Rug features a Persian-inspired design and a beautifully soft finish, making it ideal for creating a layered, restful bedroom.

Hallway

The hallway is the first impression of your home, setting the tone for the rooms beyond. Think of it as the thread that connects your interior, bringing a sense of flow from one room to the next.

As one of the busiest areas in the home, hallways call for durable materials that can withstand everyday footfall. Flat-weave or low-pile rugs are ideal, offering texture and pattern without adding bulk. A runner can also help draw the eye through the space, making even narrower hallways feel longer and more inviting. Position it centrally, leaving a border of flooring visible on either side for a balanced finish.

Hallways are also a wonderful place to introduce pattern, adding personality before you’ve even stepped into the main living areas. Our Nadiya Rug is handwoven from jute and cotton, making it a durable choice in high-traffic areas. For longer hallways, our Darica Runner creates a natural focal point, with its traditional Turkish-inspired design in soft, autumnal colours.
