Wallpaper - Your Questions Answered

After 27 years of creating patterns across upholstery, cushions and homeware, wallpaper felt like a natural progression. Our first collection brings some of our most recognisable designs to the wall, printed in the UK on a refined matt non-woven paper chosen for its durability and depth of colour.

If you’re considering wallpaper for your home, the practical details below cover measuring, hanging, care and suitability in a clear, straightforward way.

How do I know how much wallpaper I need?

Start by measuring the full height and width of each wall you plan to cover, from floor to ceiling and from corner to corner. Multiply the height by the width to calculate the total area in square metres. If there are windows or doors, subtract their area from the total.

When calculating quantities, it’s best to work in full drops (floor-to-ceiling lengths), rather than relying on square metres alone. If in doubt, allow an extra roll for pattern matching, future repairs or the occasional mistake.

Each roll is 10.05 metres long and comes in two widths:

52cm wide (covers approximately 5.2m²)
70cm wide (covers approximately 7.0m²)

You can also enter your wall measurements into our wallpaper calculator located on the product pages to find out how much wallpaper you need.

What is the wallpaper made from?

Our wallpapers are digitally printed onto a tactile, coated non-woven base. The finish is dry and matt, with no surface sheen. Long fibres are visible on the surface, giving it a soft, natural appearance.

How do I hang the wallpaper?

Preparation

For the best results, begin with clean, dry walls. Remove any old wallpaper or loose paint and lightly sand painted surfaces to create a smooth base. Lining the walls with good quality paper and allowing it to dry fully will help the finish look effortlessly perfect.

Pasting & Hanging

  • This is a paste-the-wall product. The decorator should paste the wall and not the back of the wallcovering.
Measure your wall height and cut each piece slightly longer than needed (approx. 2–3 inches).
  • Use a good quality, solvent-free, fungicide-protected ready-mixed adhesive.
  • Paste should be evenly applied to the wall, covering an area slightly wider than the paper.
  • Hang one length at a time.
  • Use a decorator’s brush to smooth the wallpaper, working from the centre to the edges to remove air bubbles.
  • Avoid squeezing paste out of the joints and ensure tools and hands are kept clean and dry.
  • If paste touches the surface, gently wipe it away with a damp sponge while still wet.

Please note: Paste may damage surfaces, and wall conditions can vary, so customers should ensure their space is suitable for wallpapering.

How do I clean wallpaper?

The surface is spongeable, so light marks can be gently removed with a damp sponge. It has good light fastness, so colour holds well in natural daylight. Avoid excessive moisture or harsh cleaning products, as these may cause peeling or distortion.

What kind of spaces is it suitable for?

Our wallpaper works well in most rooms, including living spaces, bedrooms, hallways and studies. It can also be used in kitchens and bathrooms, provided the space is well ventilated and the paper is kept away from direct splash zones.

Can I order a sample first?

Yes. Seeing the design in your own space, alongside your lighting and furniture, can make all the difference.

How eco-friendly is your wallpaper?

The designs are printed using HP Latex water-based inks, which are non-toxic and low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These inks carry recognised environmental certifications, including Ecologo and Greenguard. Our suppliers also prioritise responsible handling of ink and consumable waste.

Does OKA sell wallpaper adhesive?

We currently don’t sell adhesive. We recommend using a high-quality, solvent-free ready-mixed paste suitable for non-woven wallpapers.

Can it be used on all wall surfaces?

Wallpaper performs best on smooth, properly prepared walls. Newly plastered surfaces should be sealed first, and heavily textured walls may need lining paper to achieve an even finish.

Will the colours look the same in every room?

Colour can appear different depending on natural light, bulb temperature and surrounding finishes. We recommend ordering a sample to see how the design sits in your own space before committing to full rolls.
