How to Shop the Sales

It’s always a joy to discover something you love in your favourite store. There’s nothing more exciting than finding the perfect cushion for your sofa, the exact artwork you had in mind for your wall, or an armchair that speaks to your style. That is, until you turn over the label to find that it’s being sold at a discounted price.

However, when you’re investing in furniture, you want to make sure it’s a piece that will last, suit your style and will fit in your space. Buying something on impulse might leave you feeling you haven’t got value for money. By taking a few steps and being prepared for furniture sales, you can make sure you get the best deal.

When to Shop for Discounted Furniture

Furniture and homeware sales tend to fall at certain times of year. Here are some key periods when you’re most likely to find big discounts:

  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales happen the Friday and Monday after the US Thanksgiving holiday. This is typically the end of November and often extends into the first week of December
  • Boxing Day and January sales fall after the Christmas holidays and are a great opportunity to find a new furniture piece for the New Year
  • Easter sales are around the holiday period in March and April, making them ideal for post-spring clean redecorating
  • Summer sales mean discounts are usually available during the early summer (from June to August) and before the children return to school (August to September)
  • End of season clearances or special events can happen at any time of year, with some available exclusively in-store or online

With plenty of opportunities to find quality furniture at a discount, taking a few steps will help you be ready for when the sales start.

Tips for Shopping Furniture and Homeware Sales

Furniture and homeware is a big investment, not just for your wallet. A piece could be in your home for months or years, so you’ve got to be sure it suits your style and work practically before you buy. To avoid the overwhelm sales can sometimes bring, be sure to get ready by following the tips below.

Consider What You Really Need

If you’ve been contemplating a new set of dining chairs or a vase for a while, then these are the pieces to have in mind when shopping a sale. Think about the items that are currently missing from your home, so that you’re ready to make the most of an offer when it comes around.

Create a Wish List

One way to prepare for impending offers is to create a wish list of the pieces you really love. When you’re shopping on our website, you’ll find a ‘heart’ icon in the top righthand corner of each product page. Click on this to add your favourites to your wish list.

This will help you see any discounts on your most-wanted designs as soon as they go live. So you’ll be primed and ready to nab your favourites before somebody else does.

Don’t Purchase Under Pressure

When you’re trying to take advantage of a one-time offer, promotions can often feel overwhelming. The most salient piece of advice to follow for any sale, but especially when buying furniture is make sure you buy something you really love.

Also be sure to double check the dimensions to ensure your piece will fit in its allocated space. The pressure to purchase can distract from making practical and considered decisions. So if you have any questions about a piece, then getting in touch with customer services before you buy is recommended.

Look for Timeless Designs

Don’t get too bogged down in trends. This is particularly important if you’re shopping in a clearance sale, when all the seasonal pieces will be on offer. Seek designs that speak to your personal taste, and that you believe you will love forever.

Think about how you use your home, the rooms you spend the most time in and the spaces that are worth investing in. Perhaps you’d benefit from the perfect extendable dining table to accommodate a growing family? Or a beautiful sofa in a classic colourway, upholstered in a fabric that will wear in, not out?

The best way to ensure your pieces will never go out of style is to select timeless silhouettes in neutral, versatile colour palettes.

Choose Craftsmanship That Will Last

The style of a piece isn’t the only consideration. You need to look at how it’s made and what it’s made from, too. Sales are a great time to invest in high-quality fabrics, such as leather, silk or linen, which will only get better with age.

Handcrafted designs are also worth looking out for. Many of our pieces are made using time-honoured artisanal practices, such as block-printing and embroidery. These intricate and time-intensive techniques require immense skill and make each piece utterly unique.

Shop Both Online and In-Store

If you want the reassurance of seeing your piece of furniture in the flesh before you buy, then visiting a store to see a display version can help. Whether you take your measuring tape, a sample of fabric or paint chart you want to use or match it, this can give you a true sense of whether the piece you’ve seen is right for you or not.

Similarly, visiting outlet stores can help you find discounted furniture that isn’t available online. For example, you can find pieces in our South Godstone store that are available at exclusive discounts.

Stay Connected to Retailers

Signing up to your favourite furniture retailer’s newsletters means you’ll be the first to hear about new offers. Whether it’s getting money off orders or email alerts when sales begin and end, following these brands on social media can also help you find your ideal pieces of discounted furniture or homeware.
