How to create a bedroom for hibernating at home

Autumn is upon us, and with it a chance to take stock and rest up in a bedroom that’s as comfortable as it is beautiful, whether that’s curling up with a good book in bed or simply indulging in early nights and slow mornings. With a few simple bedroom styling ideas, from layering your bedding to getting your lighting just right, you can create a space that’s conducive to ‘you-time’ – however you like to switch off. Just in time for Sleeptember, the annual sleep awareness campaign by The Sleep Charity, we round-up the best cosy bedroom ideas for hibernating at home.

Layer on Luxurious Bedding

A beautiful space for recharging starts with luxurious bedding, as you might expect. After you’ve sorted your duvet, pillows and sheets on a timeless bed with a beautiful headboard such as Balabac, layer on throws and blankets in natural fabrics that add warmth and cosiness as well as colour, texture, interest.

Layered bedroom décor is an easy way of refreshing your entire room without having to switch up large pieces of furniture

Here, we’ve made a statement with our hand-finished Tableau throw in a striking black-and-natural colourway, while adding further accents in the new Chadhana and Latkan cushions. For something more pared-back, try floral cushions, which features an intricate floral print on one side but is plain on the other, a tassel print in burgundy providing a detailed flourish. A textural floor coverings that feels soft under bare feet adds the perfect finishing touch in the form of our Kompas rug beautifully-crafted from soft-hand spun wool.

Striking the perfect balance between style and comfort, it’s an inviting spot for snuggling up with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate when you fancy an early night, or simply for enjoying a lie-in with a snoring dog at the foot of the bed on a Saturday morning.

Get Your Lighting Just Right

Lighting is key when it comes to preparing you for rest and sleep, both in terms of the sources you have in your bedroom and the temperature of the bulbs. We suggest a layered lighting scheme of floor lamps, wall lights and table lamps so you have the right illumination according to the task at hand and the ambience required, whether that’s getting ready for the day or going to bed at night. In this bedroom,we’ve installed our new Lucas wall lamps either side of the bed with bulbs featuring a low-temperature. Both cast a soft glow that enables reading or watching television, without being overly-bright or stimulating.. The shade diffuses the light further while adding softness.

Style Up Your Storage

Visual clutter can be distracting and ‘noisy’ in a bedroom, which should feel calm and relaxing, so don’t underestimate the importance of storage. Here, we’ve packed away blankets, throws and bedding in our recently-launched Herbert cabinet – its column detail adding charm with the seafoam colourway keeping things calm. Everything is kept conveniently to-hand but in an organised and streamlined way. You can also style up the end of your bed with a trunk, such as the Crusoe upholstered in a hardwearing striped cotton, which features generous storage inside for catching the overspill and looks created topped with coffee table books or a tray laden with decorative objets d’art.

Carve Out Comfortable Spaces

Create a sanctuary for rest and rejuvenation this season, regardless of the room's proportions. The right small bedroom styling ideas are transformative, turning a compact area into an inviting retreat. Conversely, the challenge of how to make a large bedroom cosy is about drawing the space inward. Define intimate zones with thoughtfully placed furniture.

Don't Forget the Finer Details

Finally, the smallest things can make the biggest difference in your bedroom, whether it’s the addition of greenery in a natural vessel – try our faux potted Alocasia in the handwoven Tresse planter – or the presence of fragrance such as Silk Road Candle with an evocative scent of pomegranate, black amber and clove. Nature has proved time and again to be a calming and grounding influence in our interiors, particularly good for a bedroom, while soothing aromas can form part of a bedtime ritual that soothes you into a deep slumber.
