Styling a Cotswold Barn Conversion: At home with Donna Air

When she discovered a neglected barn in an enchanting corner of Cotswold countryside, British actress and media personality Donna Air knew she had struck gold. A long-time fan of OKA, she called on our Interior Design team to bring her “old meets new” vision for the space to life.

Working with a designer, there are always things you haven’t thought of. You learn so much… you learn new ways of doing things, and you can keep those tricks up your sleeve for the next one.

Recycled interiors

To begin the process of styling Air’s Cotswold barn conversion, our designers met with her to get an idea of her requirements for the singular building, which had been a tractor showroom before being left derelict for over 50 years.

The sense of history permeating the space has only been added to by the use of reclaimed materials from other old buildings throughout. Sitting in the barn’s magnificent main living space, Air notes: “everything in this room, and in this building, has been recycled, upcycled – like the stairs, which came from an old Spitfire machine gun factory.”

“I fell in love with this space because it’s so unusual; the integrity’s been brought back to a very old building. Every little piece in this house has a story. ”

Our designers then worked with Air to select OKA furniture and lighting, quickly coming to an understanding of which combination would respect the space’s integral features, such as exposed brick walls, plenty of warm Cotswold stone and the Spitfire factory staircase – while also delivering the colour, comfort and texture Air was so keen on.

My interiors style is very eclectic; I love colour, I love warmth. I like a lot of different textures. I like it to be relaxed and organic and really feel comfortable.

Indeed, colour has been key to bringing the building back to life. Of the main living space, Air explains: “There’s a lot of brick, stone and wood in this room, and there’s a lot of light, which is great – but because a lot of the surfaces are quite flat, I brought in some pops of colour with the sofa, the throw, the lamp – even the books.”

Once these details were finalised, we arranged delivery and installation.

The chosen pieces have achieved a harmonious blend; our furniture and accessories provide a gateway between older elements and touches of contemporary design, such as the dazzling floating fireplace. “I love the new pieces, like my foot stool and new lamps – they work very well with some of my older pieces,” Air enthuses.

The result of the collaboration is an inviting and peaceful place for Air to unwind, one that feels unique to her, where she can enjoy the beautiful surrounding countryside.

It’s been so fun working with the OKA team; it’s been a real lovely collaboration and a great team effort.
