Get the Mediterranean Summer Look

Fleeting moments of sunshine have us dreaming of a Mediterranean summer: Aperol Spritzes sipped on wrought-iron balconies, villas with orange-tiled roofs, lush gardens of dark green pines and a vista of sparkling blue lakes. The call of the European idyll has never felt so strong, so let us show you the many ways to infuse this carefree tranquillity and undone chic into your own home.

What is Mediterranean decor style?

Earthy tones, and natural fabrics are the epitome of a mediterranean style. Team this with mosaic tiles and dried grasses and the feel you have will transport you straight to the warmth of the med. This decor style has become increasingly popular and works in so many rooms of the home providing a synergy between living areas as well as the outside.

Colourways for A Feel of the Med

First on your to do list is colour, which is the foundation of this decor. Of course, standing centre stage should be red. Then temper that intensity with neutrals, such as white, beige, and tan. Beyond that, look to the garden for inspiration; hints of green and blue to complement the warm and bright central hue. Red and green are no longer the basis of a Christmas colour scheme; they have been reimagined to evoke a sense of sun-soaked, windswept happiness and insouciance.

Discover Texture and Textiles

Next, consider textures and textiles to bring everything together and create harmony across each of your rooms. Natural fabrics are the perfect choice both inside and outside but these don’t have to be dull. Combined with the colours of the med, you’ll start to bring together your exotic haven.

For the sitting room, linen and cotton are perfect for creating a soft but durable feel. For storage, consider wood and raffia for a touch of rustic charm, and where appropriate, a little leather can add a spot of luxury.

Regarding a dining table, choose ceramics to channel the European pottery scene and indulge yourself in charming crockery so that your quotidian coffee in the kitchen can lift your mood in just the same way.

When it comes to the architecture or outside spaces, embrace natural accents such as beams or exposed stone and don’t forget to incorporate the large terracotta pots contrasted with white walls and furniture.

Add Med-Inspired Flora and Fauna

No Mediterranean decor is complete without the addition of olive trees. Don’t panic, if you’re not green-fingered, opt for high quality faux trees, which are in bloom all year round and are perfect for both indoor and outside spaces to keep your decor looking like the perfect Italian casa.

With the right treatment, your sitting room can become as perfect a spot for settling in and reading that romantic novella as a lounger on the beach. Bring in some retro allure, with accents of brown mixed with 1950s appeal in the addition of a frill here and there: a tassel on a cushion, a fringe on a throw, a stripe on a stool. Patterns and plains can, and should be, mixed. Don’t overthink it, sometimes unusual pairings are the real winners – just like the red and purple of a breath-taking sunset in the Med.
