The Berkshire Mahal

The Berkshire Mahal

The owners of this beautiful, period country house wanted to breathe new life into it. They sought a welcoming and above all comfortable home with space for entertaining. Early on Lucinda Waterhouse made the decision to re-paint the paneling using a pale grey/blue colour throughout, and this coupled with the sisal flooring provides the perfect backdrop for bold colours and prints in the form of Indian inspired textiles and rugs, as well as a few quirky accessories.

Sitting Room

Soothing blues and vibrant reds add balance to this sitting room. The colour palette comes from an Indian-inspired throw and though it all goes together it does not match. The walls are adorned with mirrors and prints, which is quite a traditional way of decorating but adds so much character and warmth. A large coffee table is the focal point of the room.

Hallway

By just adding a table and chairs (or a sofa) you can make your hallway into an extra room. Include a console table, mirror, rug and lamp to complete the effect. A set of prints and an assortment of accessories add a homely touch.

Dining Room

This compact dining room is decorated predominately in blue. A round table aids easy flowing conversation and blue velvet chairs and a chandelier add a luxurious touch. Sideboards are essential in a dining room, not only do they look elegant you can use them for serving and storing.

Boot Room

A boot room flourishes with a comfy chair or sofa to sit on, for when you’re removing your boots and plenty of hanging space. A tiled floor is useful (as it’s much easier to clean off the mud!) but also use a rug to provide a little warmth and softness once you’ve taken your boots off. Hard-wearing leather pieces complete the room.
