Accessorising your home using the uplifting colours of spring is a great way to banish any lingering winter blues from your rooms. And perhaps fittingly, the perfect items to start with are those that are all about lighting up your space: your lampshades.
All-round or luxury lighting, floor or table lamps, card or silk lampshades – whatever you have or prefer, adding an appropriate splash of colour to them this season will go a long way towards bringing some of that springtime cheer indoors.
Any space in your home that’s lit up should always be looked at as a whole, so pick shades that complement the other colours in your room.
Decide exactly what your lamp is for – if it’s mainly for function, then light colours will give you maximum illumination, whereas if it’s more about mood or ambience, go for something darker.
If you want your lamp to be the focal point of a room, choose a bold, brightly coloured lampshade – this will make it stand out more from the rest of the room’s decor.
On the other hand, if you’re going for a more subtle approach (or want to tone down a particularly loud lamp), use neutral lampshade colours.
When it comes to home decor, neutral means, simply, without colour. Common neutral hues include black, beige, taupe, grey and ivory, and they often have underlying undertones that you should be aware of when matching them with other colours.
The exact opposite of neutral colours: bold, vivid, adding energy and drama to your palette – especially when thoughtfully combined with a neutral-coloured ‘base’ or background (this is where understanding undertones becomes important).
